About

Njúton is an Icelandic ensemble that plays new music. The group started in 1998 as a creative summer project, funded by Reykjavík city. In the ten years of the group’s activity, more than 50 compositions have been composed and performed. A selection of these works can be heard on Njúton’s first CD, Roto con moto, released in December 2007 by Bad Taste ltd.

Njúton has given numerous concerts and appeared at various music festivals in recent years in Iceland, Scandinavia and the US. The group performs regularly at the Dark Music Days festival in Iceland and was featured at the Nordic Music Days festival in 2006.

In 2004 Njúton was nominated for an award in the category “Greatest potential in Icelandic music” at the Icelandic Music Awards and again at the 2008 Icelandic Music Awards for Njúton’s first CD - Roto con moto - nominated as the record of the year in the field of classical/contemporary music.

“…an outstanding music group with a bright future ahead, it is my wish that the band be awarded the breathing space required to continue their important effort.”

(Ólöf Helga Einarsdóttir - Morgunblaðið. Jan. 2007)

“…Sigur Ros may be the most famous contemporary band out of Iceland these days, but they’re certainly not the only game in town…The 10-piece musical collective takes an inventive, eclectic approach to their art…”
